SETAs (Sector Education and Training Authorities) in South Africa face numerous challenges, including inefficient management, financial mismanagement, and difficulties in anticipating future skills needs. Some of the key functions of SETAs include skills development planning, quality assurance, facilitating learnerships and apprenticeships.

These challenges contribute to a skills gap and hinder the effectiveness of SETAs in fulfilling their mandate of skills development and training. A recent higher education ad hoc committee meeting, parliamentarians shared their concerns on the salaries being paid to SETA CEOs given the poor performance of the institutions; the appointment of leaders for these SETAs and the dire unemployment crisis.
