Rav Shlomo Katz learns from Reb Nosson of Breslov (Likkutei Halachot) on “וייפגע במקום”—Yaakov Avinu instituting Maariv.
Why is Maariv reshut (optional)? Reb Nosson explains: Yaakov saw the long, bitter darkness of galut and gave us permission, and power, to daven even when we feel mute and confused (na’alamti dumiyah). In that place, obligation can backfire; permission opens the gate.
With the strength of the tzaddikim, we discover how to cry out to Hashem in the night, not run away. Themes include: praying from darkness, no–ye’ush (no despair), turning “running from” into running to Hashem, and giving a friend a drop of chizuk that flips everything for the good.
