For the audio podcast of This Week in Enterprise Technology, Hyoun Park and Charles Araujo critically assess last week's biggest tech news:

What the US Election Means for Tech

Based on Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 Presidential Election, Charles and Hyoun preview the key issues that CIOs and tech vendors will face over the next four years and analyze the effect that Trump’s second term will have.

2024 US Election: Biden’s AI Executive Order

The clearest action that the Biden Administration took towards tech was the AI Executive Order, a far-reaching directional order to make AI more explainable and ethical. Trump has stated that he will rescind the order, but will that mean an end to this effort to clean up AI or is it a rebranding?

2024 US Election: CHIPS Bill

The CHIPS bill is slated to provide over $50 billion to the United States semiconductor industry. Trump called this a “bad bill” on the campaign trail, but building up American manufacturing is a bipartisan priority. What will actually happen to those forecasted jobs and chips?

2024 US Election: Tariffs

One of Trump’s signature promises on the campaign trail was to provide 10%-20% blanket tariffs on all imports and 60%+ tariffs on all Chinese goods. How will this affect CIO budgets?

2024 US Election: Electric Power and Energy Concerns

Both nuclear power and the energy grid have increasingly become IT-related topics. Although Trump is expected to be an energy-friendly president, Hyoun and Charles believe this advocacy will not be evenly spread throughout all energy generation and distribution environments.

2024 US Election: H1B Visas

The United States talent pool for technology is increasingly dependent on the H-1B Visa. In Trump’s first term, he made employment-based visa options more restrictive and more difficult to obtain. Will this be different in a second term where tech billionaires played a significant role in Trump’s campaign? Can Peter Thiel and Elon Musk be a moderating factor on Trump in this regard?

2024 US Election: What About the Cloud?

Although Peter Thiel and Elon Musk are obviously big winners in this election, many of the top AI and hyperscaler owners and CEOs were muted or relatively neutral. Where do tech movers and shakers like Satya Nadella, Sundar Pichai, and Jeff Bezos fit into this picture?

2024 US Election: Crypto and Blockchain

Bitcoin, cryptocurrency, and maybe even blockchain are going to get some attention again. Hyoun and Charles acknowledge how going from an anti-crypto SEC to a presumably crypto-friendly SEC will change the role of cryptocurrency in the United States.

2024 US Election: Section 230 Content Moderation

Section 230 has been both a foundational pillar of the modern Internet in protecting firms from the consequences of third-party content and a thorn in Trump’s side. Even with the emergence of conservative social media platforms such as X, what are the chances that Section 230 continues to be under attack in a second Trump term and what are the repercussions for CIOs and IT teams?

2024 US Election: Deportation and Tech

One of Trump’s big talking points in 2024 was the promise of mass deportations. What are the roles that IT and Big Tech will play in supporting deportation?

2024 US Election: Final Thoughts

The 2024 election has undoubtedly been one of true consequence and a call for change. In that light, Charles and Hyoun provide some final perspectives on finding common ground after a tightly contested election.
