The current so-called ‘civil war’ in Sudan began in April 2023. It has had almost no coverage in any mainstream news. Deaths and injuries as a result of the conflict are estimated to be in the tens of thousands, with a general acceptance that the estimates are likely to be well below reality. In addition, nearly 25 million people are experiencing extreme hunger there.Mike Robinson speaks to Professor Isa Blumi about the Sudan conflict and its place in the wider region. We discuss competing geopolitical interests, why this is yet another example of a conflict driven by geopolitics, and why, for example, Tony Blair considers the Sahel to be of vital importance.Isa Blumi is Professor of Turkish and Middle Eastern Studies at Stockholm University within the Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies. He holds a PhD in History and Middle Eastern/Islamic Studies from New York University (2005) and a Master of Political Science and Historical Studies (1995) from The New School for Social Research in New York.
