The Supreme Court has allowed Texas to use its new congressional map, a decision that could significantly benefit Republicans in the upcoming 2026 midterm elections. The high court indicated that Texas is likely to win the case when its fully reviewed, citing two main errors by the lower court. The court emphasized that lower courts should generally avoid changing election rules right before an election, ensuring the new map will be used for 2026, provided Texas files a timely appeal. Justice Samuel Alito, joined by Justices Clarence Thomas and Neil Gorsuch, separately stressed that political advantage, not race, was the true motivation behind the map. However, Justice Elena Kagan, along with Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Ketanji Brown Jackson, strongly dissented, accusing the majority of reversing a detailed factual record without proper review.
