Manage episode 470462797 series 3598774
We'd love to hear from you. Text us.
Joshua 10 examines the extermination of the Southern Canaanite Confederation. Joshua 11 annals the annihilation of the Northern Alliance. Joshua 12 surveys the full scale of the slaughter stretching back to Sihon & Og’s defeat under Moses east of the Jordan to Joshua’s conquests west of the Jordan. To many, these three chapters are some of the most troubling in all of Bible. In our passage today there are three big ideas at play: morality, idolatry & fidelity. These three big ideas lead to five philosophical questions we must unflinchingly answer. In regards to morality the question is “How can a good God call for the annihilation of the Canaanite people?” To put it more pointedly “How can a God who calls for genocide be our moral guide?” The next topic that crops up is idolatry. Those questions there are “What is idolatry” and “Why is idolatry so dangerous?”Finally, as we survey these 62 verses we are left with the subject of fidelity. The question here being “Can we trust God?”We are in the deep end of the theological pool today.
