Authorities first called it suicide — but Maggie’s spotless reputation and a second autopsy revealing a head injury cast doubt on that conclusion. Rumors of mysterious men, a carriage accident, bribed doctors, and drunken confessions only deepened the mystery. Despite rewards, a Pinkerton investigation, and wild accusations — including against the very doctor who declared her death a suicide — no one was ever convicted. More than a century later, the truth about what happened to Maggie Hourigan remains unsolved.
