The 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ended the Mexican-American War, involved 500,000 square miles of Mexican territory, including vast stretches of deserts. And what better animal to explore this new land than with imported camels. Many of whom were then set free to roam the Southwest for decades to come.
