Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S32) Umar رضي الله عنه held Talha رضي الله عنه in high regard. Umar once saw Talha رضي الله عنهم wearing an Ihraam, with a red, clay stained colour. Umar رضي الله عنه asked: “What is this?”. Talha رضي الله عنه replied: “It is my Ihraam. It is permissible”. (Different colours are permissible but white is best). Umar رضي الله عنه replied lovingly: “You are an Imaam to the people. I fear the people [who are ignorant] will imitate you, claiming Talha رضي الله عنه wore red, so we will. Refrain from this from now on”. The Messenger ﷺ prohibited the selling of gold for gold, silver for silver, barley for barley and dates for dates. Exchanging these items when they are of the same value is classed as Riba. One must first sell his item (I.e gold) then use that money to buy another product of gold of the same value. Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى knows best. Umar رضي الله عنه: “If the people knew how much love, compassion and mercy I had for them, they’d rip the clothes off my back!”. (I.e they’d take advantage).
