Robert Francis Prevost, a 69-year-old cardinal from Chicago, has been elected Pope Leo XIV, making him the first American-born pope. A member of the Augustinian order, he also holds Peruvian nationality and spent 20 years as a missionary in Peru. Elevated to cardinal in 2023 by Pope Francis, he led the Vatican office responsible for appointing bishops. Known for progressive stances on immigration, climate change, and gun control, Prevost has drawn criticism from the MAGA right.
