"Total depravity doesn't mean people are as sinful as possible or incapable of doing good things. Even those who don’t know about Jesus can show love, make sacrifices for others, and act with honesty, even at personal cost. The idea of total depravity is about the condition of human nature, not actions. 'Total' means every part of a person—mind, emotions, body—is affected by sin, and that all humans, except Jesus, have a sinful nature that separates them from God and opposes Him. Depravity should be understood in relation to God, not by comparing people to each other. In relation to God, total depravity means no one can seek, love, glorify, or please God on their own. Without God’s help, people focus on themselves and sin, just as a dead body cannot choose to rise and walk (Eph. 2:1-3)."
