Thetans are believed to have existed for trillions of years and have lived countless past lives. Death, in this context, is viewed as the thetan simply "dropping the body" – the physical organism ceases to function, but the thetan itself continues to exist. Scientology does not subscribe to the traditional notions of heaven or hell as final destinations for the soul. Instead, the focus is on the thetan's journey through successive lifetimes. When a body dies, the thetan is said to leave it and eventually inhabit a new one in a process akin to reincarnation, though Scientologists often prefer the term "assumption."
