Ray Arnaudo is a retired U.S. Civil Servant and a globally respected leader in ocean, polar, and climate policy. With over 30 years at the U.S. State Department, Arnaudo directed U.S. policy on Antarctic and Arctic affairs, serving as Director of Oceans and Polar Affairs and later on Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s Policy Planning Staff.

Ray played a pivotal role in international environmental diplomacy, leading U.S. delegations to Antarctic Treaty meetings, serving as U.S. Commissioner to the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources, and Chairman of the Arctic Council (1998–2000). He also led the negotiations to establish the Arctic Council.

His overseas postings include senior diplomatic roles in London, Moscow, and Brussels, including work with the National Science Foundation, International Maritime Commission, and as Science and Energy Counselor at key U.S. embassies.

Post-retirement, he continued contributing as a Senior Scholar at AAAS, Senior Advisor to the International Cryosphere Climate Initiative, and President of the American Polar Society. In recognition of his contributions, Mount Arnaudo, a peak in Antarctica's Commonwealth Range, bears his name.

A graduate of Stanford University and the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, Arnaudo is also a U.S. military veteran and lifelong birdwatching enthusiast.
