It is Friday so I'm speaking to an expert about Hiply. Every Tuesday we practice Hiply and every Friday we talk to experts or do Hiply Theory.
Today I'm speaking with Patrick Hogan in New York. He's a coach for movement and life. We talk about how the words we use matter. That we're all socialized to use these fighting words without even knowing it.
Patrick starts with a confession that he's Not a Warrior. He questions the use of war on drugs, war on sickness, waging war within ourselves. Even Love Warrior has this undertone of fighting.
What if we can take the tar, or judgments, out of our words? Because the words we use matter.
Mama Hiply here and I dream of a world with more kindness, peace and love, where we are just as practiced in the use of loving language as we are in being reactive, blamy and judgmental. Join me in making a difference, one Hiply moment at a time.
Patrick has been thinking about these fighting words a lot, like when we are in opposition to something that's not love.
We are looking for new word ideas, that are for, not against, what we want. Listeners - if you have any ideas please let us know.
Notable Quotes:
So, what should we do instead of the fighting words? I think, for me, this is where I've landed on. And this came from my studies in our studies with Martha Beck is something more akin to Wayfinder.
Why does a peaceful thing, like yoga, have a Warrior pose?
So in sports, there's competition, you and me. But even with how we work with our own selves, we carry over that same thing. We start to treat ourself as an enemy, and that's where I think the biggest problem lies. It's that we conceive of health as something that needs to be won, or conquered, or that all the natural instincts of our body need to be suppressed and pushed down.
It's a reminder that we're not in competition with ourselves. We are actually trying to cooperate and coregulate with our own bodies, our own selves. Our own bodies can have a lot of wisdom to help guide us where we want to go. Even just in the mundane examples, like, say, your ego wants you to get up and run five miles in the morning, but you wake up and your body does not want to get up. A lot of people have value judgment on that, that says you're being lazy, and you've got to go out and get them and just do it and all that kind of stuff. But there might be a lot of lot of wisdom into maybe you don't have didn't have enough sleep, and maybe you need to take care of yourself. And maybe your body's trying to tell you that or maybe you just simply deal with their body in a way that's not so punishing, you know, or critical.
