BEHIND THE SCENES: Co-Editor Colleen Burner on Creating and Running Shirley Magazine: an Online Journal
Manage episode 232515793 series 2401834
This episode concludes a month-long literary journal, podcast, and YouTube teaching collaboration with Shirley Magazine. I chat with Co-Editor and Oregon Literary Arts Fellow, Colleen Burner, on starting the online journal, calling for submission, creating a cohesive aesthetic, and being inspired by writer Shirley Jackson. Shirley Magazine is an online Fiction and Hybrid Forms Magazine in Portland, OR, edited by Colleen Burner and Lauren Perez. For clips from the journal, listen to two-minute readings on the weekdays of April in this podcast. To read the online copy for FREE (cool!), check out the links below. Issue 13 was just released April 29th, so it's fresh beauty at the time of this posting!

About Colleen Burner:
Colleen hails from the Midwest and currently lives in Portland, OR. I am co-editor of Shirley Magazine, co-organizer of the Queen of the Night Reading Series, and a recipient of an Oregon Literary Arts Fellowship, among other awards/honors. In 2010 they received my BFA in Painting and Creative Writing from the Kansas City Art Institute; in 2014 they received their MFA in Creative Writing (Fiction) from Portland State University. They find my processes for writing, quilting, and collaging to be strikingly similar; always have an iron in the fire; look forward to cronehood.
