I love running, it's a massive part of who I am and for a long time, totally consumed me.
I want to see the sport of running thrive because I have a deep belief that sport enables and teaches at every level.
Yesterday, I found a live stream of the World Championships 24-hour race because I wanted to see how friends were doing in the race.
I couldn't find any live stream that actually helped me watch the event as a race. The best coverage that I found was updates each hour as to the lead standings, both individual and team.
As I said, I love running, and I am a runner. How many non-runners do we think tuned in? How many even cared about the results?
The results were remarkable. Insane feats of endurance: the women's world record was broken by Japanese athlete Miho Nakaha with 270.36km. On the men's side, the favourite, from Lithuania, Aleksandr Sorokin broke 300km for the 3rd time, running 301.79km.
These are astonishing performances, but who got to see them?
Will this forever be a niche discipline within a minor sport?
What will it take to put eyes on the sport?
How many non-runners tune into any running event, apart from the Olympics?
This is the first time the World Championships 24 hours have been held in 4 years. Covid had something to do with that, but also poor planning and event management.
Nobody wants to hold the event.
