3 Big Ideas from Dr. Carlson:

  1. Identifying with/as someone else (e.g., Batman) improves impulse control in children.
  2. Psychological distancing, either via time (e.g., delaying email response 24 hours) or space (considering what someone else might do - including Batman!) can minimize the negative effects of emotions in both our personal and professional lives.
  3. Reflection about our futures enhances our executive function as adults.

“Always be yourself. Unless you can be Batman – then always be Batman.” That tongue in cheek quote always makes me laugh, but it turns out to have some fascinating truth to it, as children impersonating Batman in their work demonstrated notably increase perseverance. Today’s guest, Distinguished McKnight University Professor, Dr. Stephanie Carlson was one of the researchers who helped bring that discovery to the forefront. We’ll dig into what that, and other intriguing elements of her research, means for us in our daily personal, professional and athletic lives in today’s discussion. She’s also doing some pioneering work on how we can tap many recent cognitive findings to improve our productivity and overall performance so get ready to take some notes as we dive into the latest findings here on the Catalyst 360 podcast!
